The current leadership of Georgia is made up of pragmatists. They confirm their course towards the EU, but at the same time they understand that in such a case the country will have to give up being a country known for its agricultural products, - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Russian media.
According to him, any agrarian country that joined the EU during the second or third wave of enlargement have lost its agriculture, because in the EU there are "leading countries" that have their own agriculture, their own interests and have their own farmers.
"Currently, 70% of Georgia's trade turnover comes from Russia and other CIS countries. There is also a fairly large share of trade with China and other countries. Therefore, if Georgia decides to join the European Union, all this will be seriously questioned, given the demands that Brussels is making on new members, not to mention demands such as joining sanctions against Russia, recognizing all foreign policy decisions and actions of the European Commission, and so on. I believe that now there are pragmatists in Georgia, as I have already mentioned, and, to a large extent, our relations continue regularly. Russian tourists love to go there and enjoy Georgian nature and Georgian hospitality," Lavrov noted.
