A Georgian citizen has died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to a report by ABC News.
According to the report, 43-year-old Georgian citizen Mamuka Artmeladze, who was being held in ICE custody, died on June 4 at the Winn Correctional Center in the U.S. state of Louisiana.
ICE officials stated that Artmeladze was found unconscious inside the facility and was subsequently transported to a medical center, but medical personnel were unable to save his life.
“His official cause of death will be determined following an autopsy,” ICE said.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Georgian citizen was detained in February during an operation in New Orleans that targeted commercial vehicle drivers who were considered a threat to public safety.
“He was taken into custody after officials determined that he did not have lawful immigration status allowing him to remain in the United States,” ICE stated.
ABC News reports that Mamuka Artmeladze is the 50th person to die while in ICE custody during the second administration of Donald Trump.
