The meeting held between the European Union and Georgia on the visa issue in Brussels has ended. The meeting lasted more than two hours.
According to the Georgian representative, Giorgi Tabatadze, after the meeting he is “positive”.
“We had a working meeting within the framework of the dialogue. We talked, we heard their position, they heard our position”, - he said.
When asked whether a further meeting is planned, Tabatadze said that “the future will show”.
In addition, he said that he is “positive”.
For information, as the EU Delegation explained earlier today, the EU and Georgia were to hold an in-depth dialogue on visas, which follows the activation of the visa suspension mechanism for holders of diplomatic, service and official passports of Georgia.
“On 11 June, European Commission representatives will meet with the Georgian delegation for an in-depth dialogue on visas. This is a standard process set out in the EU Visa Regulation, which applies in the event of the activation of the visa suspension mechanism.
This process follows the decision taken in March 2026, according to which visa-free travel for holders of diplomatic, service and official passports of Georgia was initially suspended for 12 months, subject to the agreement of the Member States.
The aim of the meeting is to resolve the circumstances that led to the suspension.
As a reminder, the basis for the activation of the visa suspension mechanism was the violation of Georgia’s commitments in the areas of democracy and fundamental rights under the visa-free regime,” reads the statement.
