Georgian citizen charged with murder of Russian national in Poland, placed in pre-trial detention

A district court in Lublin-Zachód, Poland, has ordered three months of pre-trial detention for a 36-year-old Georgian citizen suspected of murdering a Russian national, according to the Lublin Police.

According to the authorities, the Georgian citizen, who was detained by members of a special investigative unit of the Lublin Police, was transferred yesterday to the National Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin. Following questioning, he was formally charged with the murder of a 44-year-old Russian citizen.

If convicted, he faces a possible sentence of life imprisonment.

The case comes after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced two days ago that police and the Internal Security Agency had detained a suspect in the killing of a Russian citizen in the city of Biała Podlaska. According to Tusk, the suspect was carrying a Georgian passport.

The investigation concerns the recent killing of a 44-year-old Russian national in Biała Podlaska. The victim was Russian artist and satirist Semyon Skrepetsky, who was reportedly shot several times near his apartment building.

According to Polish media reports, Skrepetsky was known for criticizing the Russian authorities, including Vladimir Putin, in his artistic works and satirical commentary.
