A grace period will be established until October 1, 2026, during which those who are in a fictitious marriage with a foreigner and declare it will be exempted from criminal liability, - Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze stated at the plenary session of Parliament, where he presented legislative amendments related to fictitious marriages between a Georgian citizen and a foreigner.
According to him, if one of the parties appears before the investigative body and confesses to the crime committed, he/she will be exempted from criminal liability.
"There are two important changes in the Criminal Code. One concerns a fictitious marriage. I will clarify one issue, that if one of the parties appears before the investigative body and confesses to the crime committed and assists in the investigation of the crime, he/she will be released from criminal liability. We have a similar record in relation to drugs and weapons. So, there is a chance that if a specific person is misled and cooperates with the investigation, he/she will be exempted from criminal liability. A grace period is established until October 1, 2026, those who are in a fictitious marriage and declare this will be exempted from criminal liability," Darakhvelidze said.
