Giorgi Gabitashvili - Sanctioning is a political decision and there is no problem for me to hold the position of Auditor General

Sanctioning is a political decision and there is no problem for me to hold the position of Auditor General, - the Auditor General of Georgia, Giorgi Gabitashvili, stated at the session of the Finance and Budget Committee of the Parliament, answering the relevant question of the Gakharia for Georgia MP, Tata Khvedeliani.

Gabitashvili notes that he was sanctioned even when the Parliament supported his candidacy for the position of Auditor General, which confirms that the legislative body has confidence in him.

“As for my sanctioning, sanctioning is a political decision and, according to the Strasbourg Court, it does not constitute either legal or factual evidence. So, the fact that I hold the position of Auditor General does not pose any problem. I was sanctioned when the Parliament supported me. This confirms that the Parliament of Georgia has confidence in me and the institution I lead,” Gabitashvili said.

For information, Tata Khvedeliani, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, asked Giorgi Gabitashvili a question regarding the sanctioning.

"You have been sanctioned twice by Great Britain and Estonia. This sanction was imposed due to the inaction you demonstrated as the Prosecutor General of Georgia. How can the State Audit Office be headed by a person whose professional responsibility is associated with internationally assessed systemic inaction, and how can such a figure have full institutional trust in exercising financial control?" - Khvedeliani asked.
