Ministry of Health: The state will fund the expensive medication “Jakavi” for the treatment of severe GVHD reaction developed after bone marrow transplantation

According to the Ministry of Health, the Universal Health Care State Program has been expanded - the state will fund the expensive medication “Jakavi” for the treatment of the severe GVHD reaction developed after bone marrow transplantation.

The agency reports that Georgian citizens are funded for bone marrow transplantation operations both in Georgia and abroad. However, after transplantation, some patients develop a reaction called GVHD - “graft versus host disease.” This is a condition in which the transplanted donor cells attack the patient’s body.

“In such cases, modern and high-tech medication treatment is of vital importance.

According to international clinical recommendations, one of the best treatment options for managing this complication is the medication ‘Jakavi’ (‘Ruxolitinib’), which is particularly important for patients whose disease no longer responds to standard hormonal therapy.

As a result, the state has decided that the drug ‘Jakavi’ will be fully funded for all patients with GVHD reaction.

It is also an important novelty that the medication ‘Jakavi’ purchased by the state is already available to all beneficiaries with oncohematological diagnoses, including children under 18 years of age.

These changes will further increase access to high-quality treatment and significantly ease the financial burden on patients’ families,” the Ministry of Health states.
