The number of prisoners in Georgia has increased by 43% in 18 months, - former Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Burjanadze writes on social media.
As Giorgi Burjanadze writes, “At the end of June, there were a total of 12,344 prisoners in Georgian prisons.”
“In total, there are only 12 places left in the prison as of June. From January 2025 to June 2026 (in 18 months), the number of prisoners in Georgia has increased by 43%.
In June 2026, 690 people left prison, but the prison population still increased by 209 prisoners compared to the previous month.
In institutions No. 2, No. 8 and No. 15, the prisoner limit is exceeded by the following amounts:
34% more than the limit of Kutaisi #2 prison (788 prisoners);
32% more than the limit of Gldani #8 prison (796 prisoners);
56% more than the limit of Ksani #15 prison (364 prisoners),” Burjanadze writes.
