Georgian law enforcement officers detained a person wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States for supporting the activities of terrorist organizations at Tbilisi International Airport.
This information is released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to the MIA, the man was wanted on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, providing material support, and attempting to provide material support.
“Employees of the Central Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia, within the framework of a joint declaration signed with representatives of the U.S. Department of State and as a result of close bilateral coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), detained a citizen of the United States of America and the Republic of Uzbekistan who was internationally wanted by U.S. law enforcement agencies.
The man was wanted on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, providing material support, and attempting to provide material support.
Employees of the Search Division of the Main Division for Combating Organized Crime of the Central Criminal Police Department detained the said person at Tbilisi International Airport upon his arrival in Georgia from one of the countries.
According to U.S. law enforcement agencies, the wanted person formed a group in the United States of America with the aim of providing support to a foreign terrorist organization and, for the same purpose, also created a financial assistance network which he himself led. The leader and members of the said group provided active material-technical and financial support to terrorist organizations in Syria, including the ‘Islamic State.’
In addition, the detained person urged various individuals to travel to Syria to fight and offered assistance in this regard. Currently, the extradition procedures provided for by law are underway with respect to the detained person.
