Since the expanded sanctions list announced by the U.S. Department of State includes airlines that currently operate air services between Georgia and Iran, the Georgian side, as in other cases, will now also act in full compliance with the international sanctions regime, - this is stated in information released by the Civil Aviation Agency.

According to them, Georgia takes into account the sanctions mechanisms imposed by the European Union and the United States.

“Georgia actively upholds and ensures the implementation of the sanctions imposed by our international partners. This also applies to the aviation sector.

In the process of admitting foreign airlines to the aviation market, Georgia is guided by national legislation, the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and bilateral or multilateral international agreements.

Georgia takes into account the sanctions mechanisms imposed by the European Union and the United States.

In addition, for the purpose of ensuring the safety of passengers, the local aviation market and infrastructure, the Civil Aviation Agency of Georgia has for years, as an additional monitoring mechanism, been guided by the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List (“SDN List”) of the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and by all other sanctions lists administered by OFAC. Accordingly, within the framework of the said mechanism, Georgia has previously also restricted the operations of several airlines.

Georgia will in the future also meticulously ensure compliance with international requirements and will continue to be guided by the said mechanisms. Accordingly, since the expanded sanctions list announced by the U.S. Department of State includes airlines that currently operate air services between Georgia and Iran, the Georgian side, as in other cases, will now also act in full compliance with the international sanctions regime,” - the information notes.
