European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has sent a letter to the Coalition for Change.

As Nika Gvaramia, one of the coalition's leaders, stated at the briefing, the European Commission President's letter is a response to the one they had sent; it addresses the issue of the recognition—by the Syrian authorities—of the territories of Georgia and Ukraine that have been occupied and annexed.

According to the coalition, the European Commission President notes in the letter that the EU remains committed to Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty; she thanks the coalition for the information provided and confirms that, in its communications with the Syrian government, the European Commission will certainly raise the issue of revoking the recognition of Georgia's occupied territories.

"We sent a letter to Ursula von der Leyen asking that, in any dealings with Syria, the withdrawal of the recognition of Abkhazia by the Syrian state be considered as one of the issues. Yesterday, we received a letter from her confirming respect for our territorial integrity. She thanks us for our letter and confirms that no negotiations regarding EU assistance to Syria will be conducted without addressing the reversal of the recognition of so-called Abkhazia. This is a very important and promising matter for us, as Syria is in great need of EU assistance. Therefore, this type of pressure regarding that decision could prove decisive," stated Nika Gvaramia.

Members of the Coalition for Change wrote a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, requesting that the revocation of the Syrian authorities' recognition of the occupied territories of Ukraine and Georgia be made a key topic in negotiations with Syria.
