"The situation in which Georgian Dream has placed the country is truly regrettable. Not to mention the state to which Georgian Dream has reduced the Constitutional Court—effectively burying it, just as it has buried every other independent institution in the country," the fifth President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, stated while discussing the ongoing proceedings regarding a lawsuit concerning the banning of political parties.
Zourabichvili typically hosts a weekly Facebook Live session to answer questions from the public. However, given today’s developments—with the plenary session of judges at the Constitutional Court deliberating on the potential banning of political parties—Zourabichvili remarked that today is neither the time for questions nor for answers. She characterized the decision by Georgian Dream as an attempt to bury democracy, noting that "no other country has committed such a shameful act."
Zourabichvili also criticized the Gakharia for Georgia party, accusing it of "flirting" with Georgian Dream.
"Today is a shameful day for Georgia—for Georgian statehood. Today, Georgian Dream is attempting—though it will not succeed—to finally bury democracy, the state, and our image in the eyes of the world. No other country in modern times has committed such a shameful act: the banning of everyone—the banning of all political parties.
I won't even mention the state to which Georgian Dream has reduced the Constitutional Court, or how it is burying the Constitutional Court—just as it has buried every other independent institution in this country.
If anyone can name a single institution today that is truly independent and not entirely under the control of Georgian Dream, I will award them a special prize. This is the truly regrettable situation in which Georgian Dream has placed this country—a situation from which we must absolutely emerge.
It is also shameful that one party—Gakharia’s party—is, in a sense, flirting and posturing, effectively saying, "Look at me, I’m a 'good' one—a 'good' servant—and I’m ready to serve you even more," all while such a disgraceful state of affairs is unfolding. There is no solidarity, no sense of support for others... It does not matter which political party is affected; my personal preferences or yours are entirely beside the point. This is a national issue—a problem for us all—because, as it stands, we appear truly shameful to the entire world. If a particular party and some of its representatives fail to grasp this—if their salaries and positions matter more to them than the country itself—then that is something we all need to be aware of.
Those of us who recognize where the country’s true interests lie—who understand that it is the nation, not any specific party, that must be defended—must all stand together. This is what we must do," stated Salome Zourabichvili.
