The decision by the Plenum of the Constitutional Court—rejecting a motion by the "Gakharia for Georgia" party to postpone the hearing of a lawsuit concerning the banning of political parties—sparked dissatisfaction among the politicians present in the courtroom.
Constitutional Court Judge Revaz Nadaraia noted that the party should have submitted this motion to the institution in a timely manner; however, a decision has now already been reached.
"If the party wished to postpone the hearing—claiming that the time allotted was insufficient—they should have addressed the institution about it in due time. We have been in session for three days, and only now is a motion for postponement being raised. A decision has been made! The Court has provided an explanation; if you don't like it, well, you don't like it—what am I supposed to do?" stated Nadaraia.
Berdia Sichinava, a representative for "Gakharia for Georgia," responded to Nadaraia, asserting that his intention in filing the motion was not to delay the proceedings.
"Today, it is my turn to present motions. First, I requested the separation of the case, and subsequently, an adjournment. If my intention were to cause delays, I would have filed a multitude of motions; however, the motions I have presented are substantive. I ask to be granted the time allotted to me," stated Berdia Sichinava.
For context, the Plenum of the Constitutional Court denied a motion filed by the party "Gakharia for Georgia," which requested the postponement of a hearing regarding a lawsuit on the banning of political parties. As Constitutional Court Judge Revaz Nadaraia noted while announcing the decision, the ruling is final.
