Nino Burjanadze says it is necessary to hold early parliamentary elections after election system is changed

I am sure all opposition parties will participate in the creation of a healthy electoral system, - Nino Burjanadze, leader of the Democratic Movement, said.

According to her, today an inter-party group composed of opposition parties has jointly addressed the international organization ISF, which provides consultations on electoral issues.

"I will remind the public that what we demand now had been demanded by the Georgian Dream before the 2012 parliamentary elections. Bidzina Ivanishvili and his team came to power with the promise that the election environment would be changed. However, of course, the Georgian Dream forgot this promise immediately after coming to power. After the first round of the 2016 parliamentary elections, the Democratic Movement once again voiced the same demand and reminded the government of its main promise. I addressed all opposition parties and on October 21, a statement was made on behalf of the inter-party group on the necessity of introduction of a proportional system. We also raised other important issues necessary for fair and democratic elections.

All opposition parties remain unanimous about these demands. No elections will ever be held in Georgia if these amendments are not made. Without it, Bidzina Ivanishvili will always pay for getting what he wants, which is harmful for the country," Burjanadze said.

As for the early parliamentary elections, Nino Burjanadze said that she had long been demanding the abovementioned, because "the constitutional majority belongs to the force that can maintain the government only through bribery, threats and blackmail."

Nino Burjanadze emphasized the political crisis in the country and said that it was possible to defuse this crisis through early elections.

"It is necessary to hold early parliamentary elections only after the election system and entire electoral environment are changed. I think this process will take 8 months or a year, but the sooner it begins the better it will be for our country," said Nino Burjanadze.
