Ambassador: There is a growing number of Georgian citizens, seeking a political asylum in France- it’s confusing

France has supported visa liberalization and our goal was to give the citizens of Georgia the opportunity of visa-free travel to EU countries. Our priority is to keep it, Ambassador of France to Georgia Pascal Meunier told reporters on Wednesday evening.

“At the same time, the number of the Georgian citizens, who are seeking a political asylum in France, is being increased. This is confusing and is not in compliance with the situation in Georgia. There is no war in Georgia, there is no such situation where people need the political asylum. Thus, we think that the citizens of Georgia become victims of manipulation of people who promise them something or are not informed that it will be difficult to receive a political asylum in France. This is not acceptable and according to the procedures, appropriate measures will be taken against them and they face deportation from the country. Our aim is to regulate the situation and the governments of France and Georgia permanently work in this regard. We look forward to the visit of the Minister of Internal Affairs of France to Georgia, "said the French Ambassador.
