MP Mariam Jashi has left the Georgian Dream majority. She made the respective statement in the parliament a few minutes ago.
“Almost three hours have passed since the vote. I deliberately used this time to avoid an emotional decision. In addition, many of my colleagues and friends remain in the Dream and I used the time to talk to them and inform them of my decision. I am leaving the Georgian Dream majority and accordingly, I am leaving the post of the Chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Culture.
Although I personally supported the transition to the proportional system and although the debate over which electoral system is better may continue indefinitely, it was a matter of principle to deliver on the promise made to the public two months ago.
I will always be proud of the initiatives and the truly historic changes made by the Georgian Dream government in Georgia. I will always be proud of the reforms carried out in the fields of healthcare, education, penitentiary, but I could not but make this principled decision today,” Mariam Jashi said.
