Gigi Ugulava: If the amnesty does not apply to Giorgi Rurua, then it will be an amnesty to justify the sins of the Georgian Dream

According to Gigi Ugulava, one of the leaders of European Georgia, it is important for the public to know more details about the draft law on amnesty.

According to Ugulava, if the amnesty does not apply to Giorgi Rurua, then it will be an amnesty to justify the sins of the Georgian Dream.

"General amnesty is the right idea, but as it is known, the devil is in the details and Mikheil Sarjveladze did not talk about the details. The only detail we heard from him was that the amnesty will not apply to political prisoner Giorgi Rurua. Any amnesty for the last 30 years has applied to illegal possession of a weapon by persons convicted for the first time. If this amnesty does not apply to this offence, then it will be an amnesty to justify their sins, and if the Georgian Dream wants to justify their sins, we cannot and will not help them”, said Ugulava.

Mikheil Sarjveladze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Civil Integration, said earlier today that the draft law on amnesty was submitted to the Parliament today.

"The draft law provides for the release of persons who committed certain crimes before December 11, 2020. However, the crimes do not include murders or even domestic violence”, the MP said.

According to him, at present, the initiative also covers drug crimes, except for drug dealing.

In addition, Mikheil Sarjveladze says it is unlikely that the amnesty will apply to Giorgi Rurua.

When asked by reporters about the demand of the opposition to release political prisoners, specifically Giorgi Rurua, Sarjveladze replied by saying: "I do not know anything about political prisoners in our country and I cannot agree with this assessment."
