According to Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Davit Zalkaliani, the visit of the Georgian delegation to Brussels after the meeting of the NATO-Russia Commission is very important and confirms that NATO partners pay special attention to Georgia.
According to the Foreign Minister, the meetings planned in NATO are of special importance in terms of future coordination and joint activities.
"Our NATO partners pay special attention to our country and decisions regarding Georgia will not be made without Georgia. Both the US Deputy Secretary of State and the Deputy Secretary General of NATO confirmed this during telephone conversations, and I am confident that the same will be confirmed at today's meeting with the Ambassadors. Of course, it is very interesting to hear from them, directly from the first source, what was discussed at the NATO-Russia Commission meeting, but the content of the conversations I had with NATO officials give me reason to say that our NATO allies very clearly told Russia that there will be no revision of the decision of the Bucharest Summit, that there can be no talk of spheres of influence at all, and that the issue of NATO enlargement is up to NATO and the country that wants to join NATO," said David Zalkaliani.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georgia is consistent and the country's plans for the Madrid Summit remain unchanged.
"We are consistent. Nothing is changing in our approaches, just as I am sure we will hear a similar message from our NATO partners. Our plans for the Madrid Summit are the same as before. I do not expect Russia to change its position, but it is necessary for the dialogue to continue. It was voiced by both the Secretary General and our NATO partners that the dialogue should be continued, but not at the expense of the preconditions that the Russian Federation puts in the context of NATO enlargement," Zalkaliani said.
