US House of Representatives approves Georgia Support Act

According to the MFA, the US House of Representatives has approved the Georgia Support Act, which strengthens a strong strategic partnership between the two countries at the legislative level.

According to the Ministry, the bill was re-introduced by the co-chairs of the Group of Friends of Georgia, Congressmen Gerry Connolly (Democrat) and Adam Kinzinger (Republican) on February 8, 2021 in the House of Representatives. The bill currently has a total of 19 co-sponsors, from both the Democratic and Republican parties. The Georgia Support Act underscores the United States' strong support for Georgia's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and European and Euro-Atlantic integration, as well as the right of Georgian citizens to determine their own future and foreign and security policies. Without interference or coercion. The bipartisan bill condemns human rights abuses, illegal arrests and kidnappings in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region occupied by the Russian Federation, including the killings of Georgian citizens Archil Tatunashvili, Giga Otkhozoria and Davit Basharuli, and voices initiative to sanction human rights violators. The bill supports the peaceful resolution of the conflict and calls on the Russian Federation to fully comply with the EU-brokered ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008, as well as the establishment of international security mechanisms in Georgia's Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions and the dignified and safe return of refugees and IDPs to their homes. The bill pays special attention to US-Georgia defense and security cooperation and strengthening of Georgia's defense capabilities, and instructs the Secretary of State to present a five-year strategy for future cooperation with Georgia. The bill also calls on the US administration to take effective steps to strengthen Georgia's capabilities in combating Russian disinformation and propaganda. As a next step, procedurally, the draft legislation already approved by the US House of Representatives will be sent to the US Senate. If the bill is approved by the relevant committees of the Senate and the plenary session of the Senate, it will be sent to the President of the United States, and if signed, Georgia Support Act will become law.
