Carl Hartzell: The responsibility for the health of Mr. Saakashvili, including appropriate medical care and the upholding of his fundamental rights lies with the Georgian authorities

I've said on many occasions that I'm not a doctor, I'm not privy to the facts, but I would therefore welcome very much that decisions and actions are taken on the basis of independent medical advice, EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell told reporters when asked about Mikheil Saakashvili.

According to him, the responsibility for the health of Mr. Saakashvili, including appropriate medical care and the upholding of his fundamental rights lies with the Georgian authorities.

“As you have heard from the start, we have been stressing what is fundamental for the European Union, namely the fact that the responsibility for the health of Mr. Saakashvili, including appropriate medical care and the upholding of his fundamental rights lies with the Georgian authorities. And this is what we expect from them. And we expect from them also to act in line with the assessment of his condition. I've said on many occasions that I'm not a doctor, I'm not privy to the facts, but I would therefore welcome very much that decisions and actions are taken on the basis of independent medical advice,” said the Ambassador.
