Salome Samadashvili on Michael McFaul's statement: The issue of sanctions has been raised not only in the EU, but it's also on the agenda of the USA, we should probably expect decisions in this direction in the near future

I think everyone understands that such a statement is not made by chance by a person who actually determines the circle of persons who should be sanctioned for supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine, this is how Lelo MP Salome Samadashvili responds Michael McFaul's statement.

According to Samadashvili, it is a fact that the issue of imposing sanctions on certain persons in Georgia is on the agenda of both EU and the US.

"We have already heard many hints that the current government of Georgia is directly contributing to the use of our country's territory to evade the sanctions regime, and now we have heard the statement that it is probably in the very Georgia that such activities are taking place that can be considered as providing assistance to Russia. Let's wait for what decision they will make, this information may become public much later, but the signal is very clear and this signal is for the current government of Georgia from our strategic allies who are united today around a strategic task and that is the defeat of Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war, where unfortunately, the positioning of the Georgian government increasingly calls into question where Georgia stands in this confrontation between the free world and Russia.

I don't want to enter into speculations about who will be affected by the sanctions, in case of their imposition, however, the fact is that today the issue of sanctions has been raised not only in the European Union, but it is also on the agenda of the USA. We should probably expect decisions in this direction in the near future," Samadashvili said.

For information, Michael McFaul, the former American Ambassador to Russia and the coordinator of the Russia Sanctions Group created by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, said in an interview with PalitraNews TV that they are starting to consider sanctioning people from Georgia and Belarus.

"Our group has not yet discussed sanctioning people from other countries, but we are now starting to discuss this very issue. In particular, we are considering people from Georgia and Belarus, and I think this should be done. I can't talk about names yet, because we have to come to an agreement on that, but I think there will undoubtedly be individuals in your country and in Belarus who support Putin's war, and they should face consequences," McFaul said.
