Ilia Darchiashvili: As a result of the active diplomatic steps of the Georgian side, we have a clear support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia from our partners

As a result of the active diplomatic steps of the Georgian side, we have a clear support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia from our partners, Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili stated in the Parliament of Georgia in the Minister's Hour format.

The head of the Foreign Ministry spoke about the main challenge facing the country - the occupation and the severe consequences of the aggression carried out by Russia.

"As a result of the large-scale military aggression launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the security environment in the region has worsened, which creates additional challenges for Georgia. We will spare no effort in the background of this turbulent situation to actualize the issue of the occupation of Georgian territories by Russia and the need for a peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict in the international agenda," the Minister said.

In this regard, he drew attention to the following documents: the annual resolution of the UN General Assembly on the Status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia; Resolution of the UN Human Rights Council on Cooperation with Georgia; Statement of the members of the UN Security Council regarding the 14th anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war; Resolution of the European Parliament on Security in the Eastern Partnership Area; Decision of the Committee of Deputies of Ministers of the Council of Europe; Consolidated Report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe; Joint statements of the Group of Friends of Georgia in the OSCE, including those regarding the anniversary of the August war.

According to Darchiashvili, the Georgian diplomatic service actively used all available diplomatic and legal tools throughout the year to mobilize international support in order to strengthen diplomatic pressure on the Russian Federation to fulfill its international obligations.

"As a result of the active diplomatic steps of the Georgian side, we have clear support from our partners, which is reflected in the public statements of the partner countries and international organizations and in many documents. The most important was the historic decision of the European Court of Human Rights on January 21, 2021, which established Russia's responsibility for violating a number of articles of the European Convention on Human Rights during the August 2008 war, as it exercised effective control over the Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia," Darchiashvili said.

The head of the Foreign Ministry drew attention to the decision of the International Criminal Court in The Hague of June 30, 2022, within the framework of which arrest warrants were issued for 3 representatives of the occupation regime of the Tskhinvali region.

The Minister spoke about the international negotiations in Geneva as one of the main instruments in the process of peaceful resolution of the conflict and emphasized that this is the only format regarding the implementation of the cease-fire agreement of August 12, 2008 brokered by the European Union, which ensures the actualization of the issue of the Russia-Georgia conflict on the international agenda.

During his speech, the Minister also talked about the active cooperation with the EU monitoring mission, which has an important role in the process of ensuring peace on the ground and preventing the escalation of the situation.
