According to the leader of Strategy Builder, Giorgi Vashadze, Georgia has a chance to receive the EU candidate status, although there will be no assessment mission in December, because the MEPs do not see progress in terms of the implementation of recommendations. Vashadze stated this at the briefing, where he spoke about the meetings held in Brussels on October 19-21.
According to him, the path taken by Georgian Dream will not lead us to the European Union, because there is no political will to implement the recommendations on their part.
According to Vashadze, the law of de-oligarchization, which is registered in the Parliament by Georgian Dream, is the basis for a direct negative assessment by the European Union.
"In June 2022, Georgia had every chance to get candidate status together with Moldova and Ukraine. Unfortunately, this chance was not realized, because Georgian Dream did not implement democratic reforms and, moreover, took steps that had a negative effect on the granting of candidate status to Georgia.
It is very important that we still have a chance to get the status of a candidate for the European Union, but unfortunately, the path taken by Georgian Dream will not lead us to the European Union, because there is no political will on their part to implement democratic reforms and the basic reforms that are given in the 12-point recommendations. These reforms are electoral reform, fundamental justice reform, media related reform. At absolutely every meeting, the issue regarding the release of Nika Gvaramia was raised, and you know that the European Parliament dedicated a separate resolution to this. Also, there are anti-corruption and other fundamental reforms to be implemented. Moreover, unfortunately, the law of de-oligarchization, registered in the Parliament by Georgian Dream, is the basis of a direct negative assessment by the European Union.
We still have a chance, but there will be no assessment mission in Georgia in December, because they do not see progress in the direction of reforms," said Giorgi Vashadze.
