Identification of a person and confirmation of border crossing are personal data, which we have the right to disclose only in cases defined by law. We cannot break the law, can we? - Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze told journalists while responding to the statement of opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze that the Ministry of Internal Affairs does not provide her with information related to the entry of Sergei Lavrov's family members into Georgia.
Darakhvelidze states that Dekanoidze was asked in a letter to present a legitimate purpose defined by the law for the release of this information.
"Everyone knows what a parliamentary question means, its answer must be posted on the website of the Parliament and it must be accessible to people. In our country, there is a personal data protection law, which states that a person's personal data must be processed if this person agrees or if there is a relevant legitimate purpose defined by law. We sent a letter to Khatia Dekanoidze, explained this legal framework and asked her to present the appropriate legitimate purpose that would allow us to make public the personal data of a specific person.
Personal data includes, for example, the crossing of a border. We have the right to provide this data only in cases specified by law. We cannot break the law, we must act according to what is written in the law. We have not refused. We just asked her to justify the legal and legitimate purpose. These are personal data, which we have the right to make public only in specific cases," said Darakhvelidze.
