Davit Usupashvili: Adoption of the so-called tent law was not correct, and it is very good that our position is in line with the position of the President, who vetoed it, and international organizations

It is good that our position is in line with the position of the President and the international community, - Lelo MP Davit Usupashvili said while commenting on the OSCE/ODIHR opinion on the proposed changes to the law on Assemblies and Demonstrations.

According to Usupashvili, their position from the beginning was that changes in the law should not be adopted.

"Lelo and I expressed our position regarding the so-called tent bill in the hall, during the voting, by pressing the red button. We were against it, based on the context, because you remember, we were told by the highest officials of the country that they knew who was preparing a crime, where they were going to commit it and how they wanted to cause riots and a coup, and that they opposed all this by banning constructions at rallies. No one else has taken a single step, no one has been arrested, no criminal case has been initiated against anyone, nothing has been revealed, meanwhile we have reached the new year. This was the context, why the adoption of this law was not correct, and it is very good that our position is in line with the position of the President, who vetoed it, and international organizations, be it the OSCE, or experts also say the same," Usupashvili said.

According to the Office of the Public Defender, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) prepared an urgent report on the planned changes to the Georgian Law on Assemblies and Demonstrations based on the appeal of the Public Defender and evaluated it quite critically. According to the Office, the conclusion was published today and it directly states that the bill should not be adopted.
