Khatia Dekanoidze: The majority says that the Council of Justice does not need to be reformed, and the implementation of Venice's recommendations is not mandatory

I suggested to the majority that we start the discussion on the reform of the Council of Justice according to the Albanian model, including the "vetting" direction, but we did not achieve any results, - said Khatia Dekanoidze, a deputy of the EuroOptimists in the Parliament, during the meeting held in connection with the 9 steps of the European Union. Then he said, which he left before finishing.

As the deputy noted, the majority says that the Council of Justice does not need to be reformed, and the implementation of Venice's recommendations is not mandatory.

In addition to Khatia Dekanoidze, several other opposition politicians left the meeting.

"The conversation was about the challenges in the judicial system and the 9 recommendations of the Venice Commission. One of the most prominent of these recommendations is to restore confidence in the court and the Council of Justice.

The reform of the Council of Justice envisages a "vetting system". This implies that the competition commission, by the resolution of the Parliament, deliberates and determines the composition of the High Council of Justice. Subsequently, the Parliament approves this composition. We can bring the experience of the Balkan countries to Georgia. I suggested to the majority that we start the discussion on the Albanian model, including the "vetting" direction, but we did not achieve any results. The majority says that the Council of Justice does not need to be reformed and that the recommendations of Venice are not mandatory.

We could not agree on anything today. The argument turned into another dimension and no substantive argument, unfortunately, could take place. Georgian Dream should should make decisions that will be useful to the Georgian people and further connect them with the European Union. Judicial reform, in this case, means that the "clan" of the court should be removed, and how this should be done should be the subject of discussion," said Khatia Dekanoidze.
