Ministry of Foreign Affairs: The Central Election Commission, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, plans to actively conduct an information campaign regarding the participation of Georgian citizens in the elections abroad

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in accordance with the practice established during the election period, the Central Election Commission, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, plans to actively conduct an information campaign regarding the participation of Georgian citizens in the elections abroad.

In addition, according to the agency, consular officials during communication with citizens, at meetings with the diaspora, within the framework of various events, constantly try to explain to citizens the importance of registering at the consular register and especially emphasize the fact that registering at the consular register and participating in the elections are not related to any undesirable legal consequences for the citizen.

This is the answer that the opposition deputies of the Parliament received from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili, in a written form. In particular, according to the opposition, most of the immigrants are not informed that the registration for the elections in a foreign country is only for electoral purposes and it cannot have any influence on their rights situation in a foreign country. Members of Parliament asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had conducted an information campaign or made a statement so far that the participation of Georgian citizens living illegally in a foreign country in the elections did not endanger their rights situation or whether such a campaign was planned.

In response, the document signed by Ilia Darchiashvili mentions that before the 2020 parliamentary elections, within the framework of the information campaign, a special search box was launched on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through which citizens had the opportunity to check their presence at the consular register. In the context of the parliamentary elections of 2024, the Ministry still plans to create a similar opportunity for citizens.

"Consular registration data is used to ensure effective consular protection of Georgian citizens during global, regional or local crisis situations. In this regard, it should be noted that consular registration is intended not only for citizens of Georgia, but also for stateless persons with status in Georgia and holders of a neutral identity card/neutral travel document.

Consular registration is voluntary. If desired, a citizen can apply for consular registration both through the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (www.geoconsul.gov.ge) and in the diplomatic mission/consular institution of Georgia in the country of residence, by personally arriving or by sending an application by mail. There is no consular fee for the consular registration, and therefore, the service is free of charge," reads the Minister's written answer.

Ilia Darchiashvili also notes that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted a large-scale information campaign in 2023 about the electronic system of consular activity management, which covered hundreds of thousands of citizens.
