Ilia Darchiashvili: We will continue to work so that not only the exercise of the right to vote is protected, but also that citizens living abroad can use the services that we offer in specific countries as much as possible

We will continue to work so that not only the realization of the right to vote is protected for the citizens of Georgia, but also that they benefit as much as possible from the state services offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in specific countries, - said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, during his speech in the interpellation format at the plenary session of the Parliament.

The minister answered the question of the opposition MPs, whether the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conducted an information campaign or whether it has made a statement so far that the participation of Georgian citizens living illegally in a foreign country in the elections does not endanger their legal status and whether there is a plan to conduct such a campaign.

Darchiashvili named the events held within the framework of the information campaign for the 2020 parliamentary elections and noted that "the ministry is still planning to create a similar opportunity for citizens."

"Consular officials, during communication with citizens, at meetings with the diaspora, within the framework of various events, constantly try to explain to citizens the importance of registering at the consular register and especially emphasize the fact that registering at the consular register and participating in the elections are not related to any undesirable legal consequences for the citizen. In addition, in accordance with the practice established during the election period, the Central Election Commission of Georgia, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, plans to actively conduct an information campaign regarding the participation of Georgian citizens abroad in the elections. In addition, it should be noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia conducted a large-scale information campaign about the electronic consular activity management system (portalis-geoconsul.gov.ge) in 2023, which covered hundreds of thousands of citizens. The event was aimed at informing the public about the portal, as well as consular services in general, including consular accounting. Before the 2020 parliamentary elections, a special search field was launched on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the framework of the information company, through which citizens had the opportunity to check the fact of their presence on the consular register. In the context of the parliamentary elections of 2024, the Ministry is still planning to create a similar opportunity for citizens", said Ilia Darchiashvili.
