Parliament passes Girchi draft law on gender quotas in third reading

The draft law of the Girchi political group, which provides for the abolition of the obligation of gender quotas in the process of forming electoral lists, has been passed by the Parliament in the final - third reading.

Amendments to the Electoral Code and the law on "On Political Union of Citizens"", which were discussed and adopted in an accelerated manner with the support of Georgian Dream, were supported by 85 votes (22 against).

According to the draft law, all the legal norms that require gender quotas to be taken into account when drawing up electoral lists are canceled. In addition, the norm of the Law "On Political Union of Citizens" was canceled, which stipulates a 30% supplement to the budget funding for increasing women's participation in politics and strengthening women's organizations in parties.

For information, according to the current legislation, for the parliamentary elections to be held on October 26, 2024 and after, until 2028, there must be at least one woman in every four members of the party lists, and for the parliamentary elections of October 28, 2028 and the subsequent parliamentary elections, until 2032, there must be a woman in every three members of the party list.
