Shalva Papuashvili: The Venice Commission assessments miss the aspirations of the Georgian society – we see calls to allow same-sex marriage

It is unfortunate that we see certain assessments that miss the aspirations of the Georgian society, including the insurance of risks, the prohibition of propaganda, which the bill is aimed at, - the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, said about the report published by the Venice Commission "On Family Values and Protection of Minors".

As he noted, there are dangerous trends in the report of the Venice Commission.

"There are opposite recommendations, which imply the legalization of the issues that were intend to restrict. While Georgian society wants marriage or similar relationships to be allowed only between a man and a woman, the Venice Commission recommends that we allow same-sex marriage.

In addition, in several places in the report of the Venice Commission, there are exactly those dangerous trends that we are talking about in relation to the protection of minors. For example, I quote: Individuals, including children, have the right to self-identify not only by birth sex, but also by gender. In addition, the Venice Commission says, and I quote: Certain restrictions can have a chilling effect, since banning the promotion of non-traditional sexual relations among minors can have a chilling effect, especially if those minors are LGBT activists. In some cases, the document is not based on legal considerations, but on a certain political conjuncture that may exist in a particular country. Therefore, such positions are regrettable,'' said Shalva Papuashvili.

As he mentioned, today we directly see calls for legal recognition of same-sex marriage or similar union.

According to him, the fact that only Girchi representatives from the opposition are present at the session means that others do not have the courage to discuss the issue.

"Constitutionally, including in the law, it is written that in all official documents it will be possible to refer only to a woman or a man according to their biological sex. The Venice Commission recommends that, regardless of everything, any person should be able to choose whether he is a woman or a man on his ID card - that is, without any gender change or any intervention, any person should be able to choose their gender, express their will. Such recommendations are in the opinion of the Venice Commission”, he said.
