Mr. Soso Giorgadze, Chairman of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”, within the 65th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of Member States of WIPO in Geneva, met with Mr. João Negrão, Executive Director of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and representatives of the Institutional and Cooperation Department of EUIPO.
During the meeting, the parties paid special attention to the importance of the new regional project of the European Union in the field of intellectual property “Strengthening Intellectual Property Rights in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine” (EU4IP). The project aims to contribute to an effective level of registration, protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, as well as to use IP as an instrument in creating a favourable environment for innovation, creativeness and free competition.
As Sakpatenti Chairman noted, within the project, in order to increase the effectiveness of the intellectual property protection system and to introduce EU standards in the process of proceedings, Sakpatenti will contribute to the improvement of the legal framework of intellectual property, ensure raising public awareness on the importance of intellectual property and develop the so-called sectoral strategy on intellectual property.
It is noteworthy the EU4IP project was preceded by the EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP) with the duration of three years. On the basis of the achieved results, on the initiative of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), launching of a new project was decided with the involvement of Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The project will facilitate Georgia and other candidate countries on their way to the EU membership and in joining the European Union Intellectual Property Network (EUIPN).
