Despite the sanctions, expensive cars enter Russia through Georgia. British TV channel Sky News broadcasts the investigation about this.
According to Sky News, they discovered a "complicated but sophisticated scheme" to import cars banned in Georgia by British and EU sanctions into Russia through Georgia.
According to a Sky News investigation, one group of people is tasked with transporting cars from Tbilisi showrooms, Poti or Batumi ports to the Russian border, namely the Lars checkpoint.
"After bringing the cars to the border point, they are left there for a few days while the relevant documentation is prepared. Documentation has its problems: after the introduction of sanctions against Russia by European countries, Georgia introduced its own bans on sending cars to Russia, however, there are still some ways to transport cars across the border.
One way is to register and clear the vehicles in Armenia, where they are given transit registration numbers, after which they are taken to the Lars checkpoint. Since Georgian citizens can enter Russia without a visa (and vice versa), it becomes very easy to take a car across the border.
The publication points out that with this method, the person transporting the car to Russia cannot be accused of committing any specific crime, although the whole scheme is a way to avoid sanctions. Also, the cars transported to Russia in this way do not appear in the customs data", the report says.
It is noted that luxury models of BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Range Rover, Porsche and Lamborghini enter Russia in this way.
