Canada plans to review relations with the Georgian government

Canada is concerned about the widespread facts of voter pressure, voter bribery and other violations reported by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and other impartial observers in the parliamentary elections in Georgia, the statement issued by the Global Affairs Department of the Government of Canada stated.

The agency explains that the mentioned violations should be investigated and resolved.

"Canada firmly believes that free, fair and independent elections are the cornerstone of a democratic society. In coordination with the G7 and our European partners, and in light of the conduct and outcome of these elections, Canada will reassess its relationship with the Georgian leadership. "Canada is open to cooperation with Georgia as long as the Georgian leadership respects democracy, human rights, the rule of law and resolves the recent democratic backsliding," the statement said.

The agency calls on the parties in Georgia to remain calm, and calls on the Georgian authorities to respect human rights and security in the context of peaceful protests.

"We commend Georgians for their active participation in the election process, including as voters, election workers and citizen observers," the statement said.
