The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, states that she can not congratulate diplomats on Diplomacy Day.
The President explains on her Facebook page why she does not wish to congratulate Georgian diplomats.
"I can't congratulate you on Diplomacy Day!
Although 20 years ago, it was my initiative to establish this important date, which is connected with the name and work of Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani, and we should celebrate such an anniversary with pride! Especially since Sulkhan Saba is one of the main figures of our European aspirations. European way, which we can reach only through diplomacy. But no, no, no desire to pray, no feeling of pride! It is at least embarrassing to mention it today, when the government is trampling the long-awaited European path, when the majority of diplomats meet the steps taken towards Russia with silence and do not protest.
At this time, you, the silent ambassadors of Georgia, are sitting in Brussels, Washington and in how many other European capitals, and for what? Are you so afraid?!
What peace, what dignity, what professionalism? ... Peace is in danger when the country is not good at diplomacy! Freedom is in danger when those who serve the state are afraid of their country! And independence is in danger when those who are supposed to send alarm signals to our partners pretend not to notice Russia's hybrid actions! Petrified, disappeared, hidden in embassies, like in sorority houses, no one heard their voice, they could not even protect the constitutional right of immigrants to vote in the elections, and they are hiding... But don't let anyone remember their existence! History will not forget you, and come to Sulkhan Saba! Mentioning him cannot save you and you cast a shadow on his name!" - wrote the President.
