Shalva Papuashvili: The opposition has a primitive attitude even towards the US political establishment - their illusion is that you can establish personal contacts, take a photo with someone, and this is foreign policy

What has happened to our relations with our Western partners in the last 2.5 years is due to the context in the region - our optimistic expectation is that under the new administration, this context will change and there will be an opportunity to restore the level of relations that existed before - said Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, thus answering the question that Republican senators supporting Donald Trump join the "Georgian People's Act", which talks about the impeachment of the representatives of the Georgian government.

According to him, the new administration of the United States of America is viewed optimistically, because the main thing is that "political approaches will change, which will change the context in the region."

"We are waiting for the inauguration, the formation of a new administration, and we look optimistically at the new administration, not because someone outside of Georgia will start caring more than us (no one cares about Georgia more than Georgians), but because what has been happening in the last 2.5 years affects our relations with our Western partners. Because of the context in the region. First of all, this concerns Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine. These relations turned out to be hostage to this very context, because, as it turned out, at that moment our Western partners had an expectation that we would escalate with Russia, and we did not. Someone was offended, someone was angry, someone heard us and understood why we don't want to sacrifice our people within this general geopolitical context. Therefore, our main optimistic expectation is that this context will change under the new administration. When the context and environment change, there will be an opportunity to restore the level of the relationship that was there before", said Shalva Papuashvili.

According to him, the opposition has an approach where they look at the representatives of foreign countries in the way they can have personal contact with, although "politics is not structured like that".

"The opposition has a primitive attitude even towards the American political establishment. Their illusion is that you can establish some personal contacts, take a photo with someone, and this is foreign policy. They had such a foreign policy until 2012, they were hoping for personal contacts, and we have seen how far they have brought the country in terms of foreign relations. We have a different approach, we act primarily with national interests", said Shalva Papuashvili.
