Marko Mihkelson: Democracy in Georgia is over and Georgia is becoming a purely autocratic regime

Unfortunately, today we can say that democracy in Georgia is over and Georgia is becoming a purely autocratic regime, - said the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament, Marko Mihkelson, in an interview with the Georgian editorial office of "Voice of America".

According to Mihkelson, the only institution that enjoys an independent status in Georgia is the President's Institute. According to a European senior official, "Georgian Dream" will try to control this institution under the new president.

"Unfortunately, it was not a big surprise, at least to me, that the results of this election would be so dramatic. In fact, over the last 12 years we have already witnessed a gradual state capture by the ruling party, directly supported by ideas and positions from Russia.

This was not a surprise. But for many Georgians, "Georgian dream" is equal to "Russian dream". What happened and, unfortunately, today we can say that democracy in Georgia is over and Georgia is becoming a purely autocratic regime.

The last institution, which is still independent, is the presidential institution. Salome Zurabishvili's mandate will expire next month, and I am sure that the ruling party is trusted to control this institution.

We have seen numerous cases of mass fraud on election day, and attempts to change the results. Courts in Georgia are not independent and they (mostly) do not entertain complaints in favor of independent observers.

"Yes, even before going to Georgia, based on these facts, which we knew from the observers, we said that there is a need for an international investigation of the election results... to prove that these elections were not fair and free," Mihkelson said.

As he said in his conversation with "Voice of America", if the Parliament of Georgia meets without listening to the will of the people, then Georgia's road to the European Union will definitely be over.

"Why is there such a high interest from us? Because Georgia is still a candidate country for the European Union. I would like to say very clearly that if "Georgian Dream" announces the official results of these elections, and then the parliament meets without listening to the will of the Georgian people, then this road to the European Union is truly over for Georgia. At this point, I don't see any other outcome.

If you respond to the invitation of the President of Georgia, it cannot be considered as interference in the affairs of Georgia. It is simply ridiculous to hear such statements from "Georgian Dream", it shows us that these politicians really do not know what democratic processes mean, as well as relations between EU member states. I don't think we will see any good changes in the near future because it seems that the ruling party doesn't pay any attention to the people's demonstrations that happen almost every day. In my opinion, they will try to legitimize the results of these falsified elections", Mihkelson said.
