"The President is elected for a five-year term. We offer a draft resolution, according to which the Parliament of Georgia determines that the next election of the President of Georgia will be scheduled for December 14, 2024. According to the same legislative provisions, the inauguration takes place on the third week, that is, the inauguration of the president will take place on December 29, 2024. With this, we will fully engage in the constitutional provision that refers to the election of the president for a term of 5 years.
This time the president will be chosen by the electoral college, which consists of 300 members. Of these three hundred members, 150 are members of parliament. Also, the full composition of the Supreme Council of Adjara, i.e. 21 members. 20 members of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia and the remaining 109 members will be recruited from the members of the city councils according to the proportionality and ratio that was established as a result of the 2021 local self-government elections. Accordingly, this collegium will meet on December 14 in the building of the Parliament of Georgia and elect the president. The Central Election Commission will conduct the elections.
In accordance with the constitution, in order to be elected in the first round, a candidate must receive the support of 2/3 of the votes of the collegium members. If he fails to collect 2/3, then the second round is held. Regarding the elections, there is also a specified time in the law and it will start from 09:00. If necessary, the second round of elections will be held on the same day. It is important that we all prepare for this important date. Finally, in accordance with the draft of this resolution, presidential elections will be held on December 14," Papuashvili said.
