Ombudsman: Physical violence is an understatement, I saw a person with bruises all over his face - this is cruelty, there is no justification for treating people in this way

Physical abuse is an understatement, people tell how the special forces mercilessly beat them when they were being taken to a car during their arrest. In the meantime, they were subjected to such physical abuse, such physical abuse that I saw a person whose entire face was practically covered in bruises. This is brutality, there is no justification for treating people in this way, - said the Public Defender of Georgia Levan Ioseliani, who visited the detainees at the city's main department last night and also spoke with those who have not yet been placed in the department and are being held in cars.

According to Ioseliani, 11 out of 13 people in the isolation ward speak of severe physical abuse.

According to the Ombudsman, they have injuries mainly in the face.

“In this isolation ward, where I was just entering, I visited all the detainees who met me here, including those who are waiting to be accommodated. There are more than 13 people currently in this isolation ward, and the saddest thing is that the absolute majority of these people, except for two, indicate physical violence. Physical violence is an understatement, people tell how the special forces mercilessly beat them when they were being taken to a car at the moment of arrest. In the meantime, they were subjected to such violence, such physical violence that I saw a person whose entire face was practically covered in bruises. This is a kind of cruelty, there is no justification for treating people in this way,” the Ombudsman said.

He called on the police not to abuse their authority during arrests.

"I once again call on the police not to abuse their authority when detaining people, regardless of what the citizen did. There is a law for this. The law must be followed, first of all, by law enforcement officers. Someone may have done something wrong, but we must approach that person according to the law, and not in a lynching manner, where you come up to them and punch them in the face, such a thing is unacceptable. I saw this with my own eyes when I came here. The injuries are mainly in the face, but they say that they have such injuries elsewhere as well," said Levan Ioseliani.
