I would like to call on the Special Investigation Service to effectively investigate such cases - if this process is not stopped somewhere, we will see even more violence at future rallies and in the end, someone may die in such conditions, - said Levan Ioseliani, the Public Defender of Georgia.
According to him, it is precisely the delay in the investigation that has led to the fact that, unlike previous rallies and the rallies held last year, more and more people are indicating physical violence.
"The delay in investigating such cases has led to the fact that even more people are victims of violence at these rallies, unlike previous rallies, unlike the rallies held a year ago. If this process is not stopped somewhere, we will see even more violence at future rallies and in the end, someone may die in such conditions. So, this is everyone's responsibility, but especially the responsibility of those who detain, those who investigate, those who conduct police measures there, to ensure that such cases do not occur.
Any case that remains uninvestigated, to which the state does not respond in a timely manner, the probability of such cases recurring, of course, is higher,” Ioseliani said.
According to him, representatives of the Ombudsman’s Office are present in all detention centers and protocols are being drawn up. As Ioseliani noted, he also spoke to the detained lawyer, Beka Basilaia.
“Our representatives are present in all detention centers across Georgia where they are detained. Accordingly, we will publish information about all of them, as we did about last night’s incident, when we saw these people and published information about everyone, what injuries they have, how they are, etc. Protocols were drawn up and sent to the Special Investigation Service.
I spoke with Beka Basilaia, he also indicates injuries. He is a lawyer, he is well aware of his rights, therefore he intends to speak about all this in court," the Ombudsman said.
According to Ioseliani, the people visited in the isolation ward have already been provided with medical assistance.
"I saw people here who were in the clinic and have returned from the clinic, they were provided with appropriate assistance," the Ombudsman said.
