Shalva Papuashvili on the decision of the USA: it is regrettable that the administration that is in charge and should transfer the power makes such a statement and creates a certain position for the future administration, which may not be favorable

It is regrettable that the incoming administration, which is supposed to hand over power, makes such a statement and creates a certain position for the future administration, which may not be favorable, - said the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, in the statement made by the State Department of the United States of America regarding the decision to suspend the strategic partnership with Georgia.

According to Shalva Papuashvili, despite the desire of the Georgian government, cooperation with the USA has been passive for years.

"I think it is regrettable. When the administration is in the process of transferring power, such decisions should not be made, because it creates a certain factual situation for the future president, which should not happen at this time, when the administration is in a transition period.

Regarding the decision, unfortunately, over the years, the strategic partnership did not acquire the content that we wanted it to acquire. The strategic partnership included a free trade agreement, visa-free travel, direct flights, etc. It should have been a part of this, in our view, which would be the individual instruments of strategic partnership implemented in practice, which unfortunately we could not see. Among them, the council envisaged by the strategic partnership has not even met for the last 6 or 5 years. We have always wanted the cooperation to be more active in this regard. Unfortunately, this cooperation was passive", said Shalva Papuashvili.
