Regarding Georgia, there is a bipartisan consensus in the Senate and the Congress, - Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee of the US Senate on European and Regional Security Cooperation, Jeanne Shaheen (Democratic Party), said at the hearing on the "Magnitsky Act" in the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
According to Senator Jeanne Shaheen, she and the member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator James Risch (Republican Party) spoke to the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, by phone today.
"As we know, the situation there (in Georgia) is becoming increasingly difficult. This committee has been loyal to the Georgian people for a long time. I think we are all watching the deteriorating political situation with concern. For the last seven days, thousands of people have been protesting the decision of "Georgian Dream" to suspend the EU accession negotiations. I think it is important to clearly state that there is a bipartisan consensus in the Senate and Congress on this issue regarding Georgia, and we are not going to tolerate the gross violations of human rights that are taking place in the country without action. I hope that the Prime Minister and the ruling party will understand this message," said Jeanne Shaheen.
