Davit Matikashvili: The country already has a true patriot, a politician who loves their country and for whom no obstacle exists when it comes to serving the nation. It’s time for Zurabishvili to look for a new job

"Our country now has a true patriot and a politician who has dedicated their entire life to our nation. This is a seasoned politician, a multi-term Member of Parliament, and a fighter for whom no obstacle is too great when it comes to serving the country," stated Davit Matikashvili, Chair of the Parliamentary Procedural Issues and Rules Committee, while speaking about Mikheil Kavelashvili, who was elected as President by the Electoral College.

Matikashvili expressed confidence that Kavelashvili will "restore the presidential institution, which has been damaged by Salome Zurabishvili’s anti-Georgian actions, within constitutional boundaries."

"I am deeply convinced that Mikheil Kavelashvili will bring constitutional order back to the state of affairs disrupted by Salome Zurabishvili’s unconstitutional and anti-Georgian behavior. The election of the President, conducted in full compliance with the legal framework of a parliamentary republic, was entirely appropriate. I congratulate Mikheil Kavelashvili, congratulate all of Georgia, and wish him success in serving his country—advancing our homeland, fostering development, unity, and progress on the path to Europe," Matikashvili said.

According to him, it is time for Zurabishvili to seek a new job.

"When they talk about legitimacy, it becomes clear that both Zurabishvili and the radical opposition are projecting their own legitimacy issues. The legitimacy granted by Georgian Dream and Mikheil Kavelashvili is based on democratic constitutional principles, which everyone must respect. Georgian Dream has the backing of 1,200,000 people, and indirectly, so does Mikheil Kavelashvili. It is Zurabishvili and the radical opposition who face a legitimacy crisis.

The attempts by Zurabishvili and the radicals to steal Christmas and New Year’s celebrations from our society and children, and to deny the country the occasion of a new president’s inauguration and their entry into the Presidential Palace, are shameful. Zurabishvili should indeed look for a new job. She has ended her term on a very disappointing note, serving as a reminder of how a president of this country should not behave," Matikashvili concluded.
