Mikheil Kavelashvili: Our interest is in EU membership, closeness to Europe, and I know that their interest is also this, we are trying to somehow return to the healthy process

Our interest is in EU membership, closeness to Europe, and I know that their interest is also this, we are trying to somehow return to the healthy process, - stated Mikheil Kavelashvili, who was elected to the position of president by the electoral collegium.

According to him, their views must change. In addition, according to Kavelashvili, “in some cases they are insulting” and “treating incorrectly.”

“The statement that Irakli Kobakhidze made may have been incomprehensible to someone, but he explained it well on the same day and later clearly explained to the public what he meant and we can return to this topic.

We have a clearly defined, long-term process planned in relation to the EU. We constantly recognize this and inform the public. Despite the fact that there was more than one offensive resolution and humiliating attitude on their part. It seems that we should be equals, what we demand is a relationship based on mutual respect and transparency, they seem to superficially recognize, although in their actions we see the double standard, which our government and people, who saw this process, have constantly recognized.

What is our attitude? - We are open to these processes. We say, of course, that our desire is to become a member of the European Union, this is the declared will of the state and we all agree on this, but at the same time we have our national interests, which are not to your detriment, but this is our organic feeling, we do not refuse.

The Prime Minister clearly stated that we are ready today to open negotiations, sign and enter the process. This is from our side. This is so clear. But we are of the opinion that their views should change. In return for what they are doing to us, in some cases they insult us and treat us incorrectly, but we do not respond to them accordingly.

We know that these positions must be changed, because our interest is EU membership, closeness to Europe, and I know that it is also in their interests. We are trying to somehow return to the healthy process. This is a very important issue.

We are not hiding anything from our society, we are directly telling them what direction we are returning to in relation to the EU. It was said in the statement that we will not trade. This is not in our interest and, as a rule, it should not be in their interest either,” Kavelashvili told Imedi TV.
