We have invited President Salome Zurabishvili to the European Parliament, - the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said at the opening of the plenary session of the European Parliament.
She expressed solidarity with the Georgian people on behalf of the European Parliament and stated that they categorically condemn the repression against the Georgian opposition, the use of force against peaceful demonstrators.
According to her, such actions are incompatible with Georgia’s European path.
The European Parliament calls on all 27 EU Member States to unite and reach an agreement on sanctions measures.
“The European Parliament expresses solidarity with the Georgian people, who for two weeks have been peacefully taking to the streets of Tbilisi and across the country, calling for a European future, waving the EU flag, while being attacked by water cannons. To the Georgian people: we see you, we hear you and we stand with you. This Parliament categorically condemns the repression of the Georgian opposition and the use of force against peaceful demonstrators, which are incompatible with Georgia’s European path. We call for decisive action, including sanctions against those responsible, and we call on all 27 Member States to come together and agree on these measures,” said Roberta Metsola.
According to her, they stand by Georgia and the EU’s door will always be open.
“We have invited President Salome Zurabishvili to the European Parliament. We will discuss with her which format would be the best for this. We stand by Georgia on its path to a European future and our door will always be open,” said the President of the European Parliament.
