Italy has expressed its support for the measures, including sanctions, proposed by the EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, the Italian Foreign Ministry reports.
According to the statement, Italy has joined the consensus on the initiative to suspend the agreement on the facilitation of diplomatic visas.
In the statement, Italy reiterates its message of support for the Georgian people.
"During the Foreign Affairs Council discussion on the situation in Georgia, Italy, which reiterated its strongest condemnation of the violence in the country in recent weeks, also expressed its support for the measures proposed by High Representative Kaja Kallas, including the initiatives on sanctions (which were blocked due to the lack of consensus among the member states).
Our country also joined the consensus on the initiative to suspend the agreement on the facilitation of diplomatic visas.
Finally, Italy reiterated that the European Union must remain on the side of the Georgian people and expressed the hope that Tbilisi's recent decisions, which have blocked its European path, can be reconsidered," the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The statement comes hours after Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, at a press conference held at the government administration, thanked 5 countries - Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, Spain and Romania, which "expressed a position in support of the Georgian people at the Council of the European Union". According to him, the Georgian government has specific information on 5 countries, although "we must think that the list of countries that opposed the sanctions is even wider".
