Tina Bokuchava – The visit of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe is primarily a demonstration of support for the Georgian people and an assessment of their human rights situation, a demand for the release of those unlawfully detained, and the issuance of an international conclusion on the inhumane and torture-like treatment that has been assessed by local NGOs. This was stated by the leader of "Unity - National Movement" in a comment to journalists regarding the visit of the Council of Europe Secretary General, Alen Berset.
She pointed out that during the meeting with Alen Berset, the issue of the release of unlawfully detained individuals was raised.
"I want to make it very clear that this is not a visit that will address the legitimacy of elections or the government. I think Alen Berset himself will openly say this to the media. The mandate of Alen Berset and the Council of Europe's delegation is to assess the human rights situation, which, in fact, has significantly worsened in Georgia due to Ivanishvili's repression, violence, terror, and inhumane treatment that amounts to torture. This has been directed towards peaceful demonstrators and hundreds of detainees. The vast majority of them have been severely beaten, especially with severe facial injuries. This is the main focus of their interest. Naturally, our primary demand, which we are raising with this delegation, is the release of the unlawfully detained, those political prisoners, most of whom have been beaten and tortured by Ivanishvili's Russian-backed regime. I hope that Berset will provide a public explanation regarding the purpose of this delegation's visit to Georgia. First and foremost, it is to show support for the Georgian people, assess their human rights situation, demand the release of unlawfully detained individuals, and issue an international conclusion on the inhumane treatment, which local NGOs have described as equivalent to torture," said Tina Bokuchava.
