We explained the current situation in Georgia to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe - a certain number of people are detained mainly under administrative law due to violent acts and we explained that the maximum term of administrative detention in Georgia is 15 days, therefore, by the end of the month these people will be fully released, - Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated at the press conference.
According to him, he also told Alain Berset that the rallies in Georgia have recently become peaceful.
“Alain Berset’s visit to Georgia is an important expression of support for Georgia and the Georgian people. We had interesting and productive discussions. We explained to the Secretary General the current situation in Georgia. We explained that the rallies have recently become peaceful, therefore there is no longer a need to use police force and we are sure that the situation will continue to be like this in the coming days and weeks. We also provided clarifications regarding administrative detention. A certain number of people are detained under administrative law mainly due to violent acts. We explained that the maximum term of administrative detention in Georgia is 15 days. Accordingly, by the end of the month, these people will be fully released. This is the clarification that we gave to the Secretary General on this issue. This does not apply to people who are in pre-trial detention under criminal charges. There are approximately 30 such prisoners. We also explained this to the Secretary General. As for the investigation - investigations will be conducted in both directions. The Secretary General received clarifications on this as well. We have once again expressed our readiness to cooperate with all Council of Europe structures on these issues," Kobakhidze said.
