"When a parliamentary republic faces a crisis, it holds new elections. Elections are the ultimate remedy for achieving social and political peace among people," said Grigol Gegelia, the Foreign Secretary of Strong Georgia, during an appearance on PalitraNews' program Day's Newsroom.
According to Gegelia, Bidzina Ivanishvili will have to back down and call for new elections, and the sooner this happens, the better it will be for the country.
"This has been, and continues to be, a crucial month. Throughout the month, we have seen that the people are not giving up and are not stopping. It is evident that Georgian Dream did not anticipate this kind of determination and relentless spirit. They are in shock—this regime is in shock and flailing.
The regime has faced significant blows in terms of sanctions, international isolation, and internal defections. We saw a high-ranking GDD officer resign, six diplomats step down, and the business community clearly express its stance on the government’s course.
We witnessed a grassroots process—a movement created by society itself—where the leader is the people, not any single politician. I believe the protest is progressing successfully, with its main strengths being peacefulness and persistence. When you are on the side of truth, the power is with you.
In meetings with the President, the four coalitions have demonstrated a very clear spirit and alignment on both tactical and strategic issues. Until political will is expressed through elections, there will be no social peace in this country.
When a parliamentary republic is in crisis, it holds new elections because elections are the best way to achieve consensus and peace among people. The very act of voting and seeing it reflected is a path to consensus.
We are not interested in any changes from Georgian Dream because they are not a legitimate government. They have no mandate from the people. Have you ever heard of a government that relies on a few hundred riot police claiming the right to decide the lives of millions of Georgians? It’s inconceivable.
They cannot override the choices of millions of Georgians just because they have special forces at their disposal. We know for a fact that the opposition won, and Georgian Dream was defeated. Even with all their manipulations, they managed just 37%, while the opposition garnered 52%.
We will revoke the ‘Russian law’ and spend the next year fixing the immense harm they’ve caused. Ivanishvili will have to back down and announce new elections, and the sooner he does so, the better for our country.
We don’t want the country to suffer further or remain in crisis. We want stability and peace, and our desire is to achieve both,” Gegelia concluded.
