The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has introduced a group of independent lawyers.
According to Salome Zurabishvili, the group of lawyers will protect citizens who need legal aid.
“I very much hope that such a need will not arise in the country soon, but today, given the situation where we are and where young people are, who are in our streets and cities every day with various marches and protests, in very difficult conditions, who are arrested. When the Women's March came to me yesterday, there was retaliation, in an unacceptable form. People are being arrested in an unacceptable form, so people need all kinds of protection. Also, people need protection when police go to their homes for searches, even though there is no legal basis. Our citizens need daily and minute-by-minute protection. A group of lawyers has been created. They have come together to protect our citizens, to give them legal advice at the first stage, for which there will also be a hotline, and they will provide assistance. All this will be free of charge. This is an expression of a very civic feeling. This is what creates society. A truly Georgian and free society is being created before our eyes in different angles and directions. I not only welcome this, this is a source of our hope, because no regime can oppose and defeat established societies. An established society with committed people is what will always prevail over everything.
I want to tell these people that this causes great gratitude from us, because we want these people who are in prison today, or who will be threatened tomorrow, to be protected, we want them to get out of prison as quickly as possible.
I am sure that they will be released very quickly, because this regime will have no other choice. Very soon. Until this happens, you have to work, and for that, thank you all very much," Zurabishvili said.
