Guram Mcharashvili: If you think that the relationship with the U.S. should not be a partnership but a vassal one, that's a problem with your thinking! We have never said that January 20th is a sacred date

Guram Mcharashvili: "We have never said that January 20th is a sacred date — on the contrary, the collective 'National Movement' and Giorgi Gakharia said that after January 20th, nothing would matter, and if anything should be done, it should be done before January 20th! If you think that the relationship with the U.S. should not be a partnership but a vassal one, that's a problem with your thinking!" This is how Member of Parliament Guram Mcharashvili responded to a question from Interpressnews regarding critical statements made by members of the "Republican Party" — Joe Wilson, Michael McCaul, and Jim Risch — about the Georgian government's stance, specifically concerning expectations regarding relations with the U.S. after January 20th, when Donald Trump assumes presidential powers.

Mcharashvili emphasized that Joe Wilson's statement is less important than the fact that Trump invited China's President Xi Jinping to his inauguration, which he believes signals a normalization of U.S.-China relations.

“You asked Giorgi Gakharia and the collective 'National Movement' why January 20th is their sacred date? Don’t ask me about January 20th because Gakharia said it’s important! We never said that if Trump or Kamala Harris won the election, we would have made a different decision. Our decision is clear: we want a partnership with the U.S. and it’s your problem if you think it should be a vassal relationship.

Our principle is that no matter who is in power in the U.S., we want a partnership with them — whether it’s Trump or anyone else. We’ve said that Trump’s policies and statements on issues like family values, ending the war in Ukraine, bringing faith into schools, and anti-transgender policies align with what we believe in, and that’s why he was elected.

This is our expectation — we’ve never said that Trump will sit down and think about Georgia 24/7. If you’re objective, ask Giorgi Gakharia and Nika Gvaramia, who used to insult Trump, how they plan to handle relations with the U.S. now. Why can’t you ask them those questions?

Trump says that transgender policies and LGBT propaganda are madness, and based on that, we expect a shift towards a more partnership-oriented relationship with the U.S.!

Trump invited Xi Jinping to his inauguration, and Joe Wilson's statement is more important than that? Who is more important, Trump or Wilson? Doesn’t Trump inviting Xi to his inauguration mean a normalization of relations with China? Do you not have logical thinking?” Mcharashvili said.

Joe Wilson, the Chairman of the Helsinki Commission and a Republican, posted three times on platform X regarding Georgia.

Wilson wrote that Donald Trump’s stance on America’s self-declared enemies is clear.

“President Trump has made his position very clear on America’s self-declared enemies. If Bidzina Ivanishvili pushes through his plan to destroy Georgian democracy by December 29, he will face a response he can’t even imagine.”

Wilson also posted about the contract signed by Georgia with a Chinese company for the construction of the Anaklia deep-sea port.

"Why did Georgia's dictator-in-waiting, Bidzina Ivanishvili, sign a contract for the construction of the Anaklia deep-sea port with a sanctioned Chinese company? Are you ready for sanctions, Bidzina?" Wilson wrote.
